Oklahoma Baptist University Mourns Passing of Harry E. “Gene” Wallace

Harry E. "Gene" Wallace, a 1990 Oklahoma Baptist Athletics Hall of Fame inductee and former coach for the Bison baseball and men's and women's basketball programs, passed away on Monday.

Funeral services was held Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 10 a.m. inside Raley Chapel on the campus of Oklahoma Baptist.
 
A native of St. Louis, Missouri and born on May 5, 1933, Wallace started his OBU athletics career in 1960 as an assistant basketball coach. He held that position for nine seasons and helped the program attain a 204-91 record before joining the OBU staff full-time in the fall of 1965. At that point, he added the position of head baseball coach.
 
In his first season on the diamond, he led OBU to a conference title and to the NAIA regional playoffs. Wallace ended up coaching the baseball team from 1966-75 and from 1979-84, compiling an overall record of 303-257, and winning five Oklahoma Collegiate Conference East-Half titles and one league championship.
 
On the hardwood, he directed the men's hoops program from 1970-78 and attained a record of 129-114 while leading his teams to seven NAIA district playoffs. In 1973, Wallace and the Bison won the district and advanced to the "Elite Eight" of the NAIA National Tournament.
 
As for the women's program, Wallace served as the interim coach for two years. His teams were 37-27 in that time.
