Oklahoma Baptist University Gorillas Edge Bison in Season Opener

Pittsburg State held off Oklahoma Baptist 70-66 on Friday during the Washburn Crossover Classic at Lee Arena. Trailing by as many as 15 points in the second half, the Bison pulled all the way back to within one before the Gorillas ended the final 3:29 with a 6-3 stretch to preserve victory.

Highlighting the night for OBU was freshman Jaedyn Getman. Her 22 points were the most ever scored by a freshman in a season opener since the program joined NCAA Division II in 2015-16.

First-quarter action saw the Gorillas hit four 3-pointers to help achieve a 17-10 lead. Tristan Gegg scored nine of those points for PSU on a trio of three-balls.

A quarter later, Pittsburg State extended its lead to eleven, 27-16, after a three-pointer from Grace Pyle before the green and gold closed the stanza strong. Getman scored seven points in the final 6:08 and paired with an and-one conversion by senior Melissa Southard, the Bison trailed 34-28 at the break.

After the third period in which the Gorillas went up by fifteen, 56-41, at the 1:50 mark, OBU would start to make its comeback. Over the next eight minutes and 21 seconds, the Bison would score 22 of the game's 30 points.

Midway through the fourth, Jill Leslie, Madison Chambers and Getman teamed up to score 11 points for the Bison and after a fast-break jumper from Getman at 3:29, the scoreboard read 64-63.

Over those eight-plus minutes that OBU rallied back, its defense held PSU to 3-of-10 shooting and forced five turnovers.

However, after the Bison pulled to within one, they wouldn't get any closer. In the final three minutes and change, the green and gold would score just three, an Azariah Jackson free throw and jumper by Getman.

OBU did shoot 61.5 percent from the field in the second half to boost its post-game final to 43.9 percent. It also was impressive at the foul line, hitting 11-13 (84.6%).
