Oklahoma Baptist (19-4, 6-2 GAC) extended its win streak to five on Tuesday afternoon with a couple of victories over GAC foe and rival Southern Nazarene (9-10, 1-6 GAC) at Bison Softball Park. OBU cruised to a 4-2 victory in game one before completing the sweep in a 3-1 triumph in the finale.
GAME ONE
Scoring got off to a quick start for the home team as the reigning Great American Conference Player of the Week, Kennedy Clark, smacked a single from the five-hole to chart the game’s first score.
At the top of the second, the OBU defense forced a couple of ground-outs and a fly-out to retire the SNU side. Then the Crimson Storm responded in its next turn at the plate, charting its first run in the third.
Oklahoma Baptist combated the action with two more scores at the bottom of the fourth, courtesy of a Zoey Johnson moonshot over the left field foul pole. Again, the opposition retaliated with another run in the fifth to draw the tally 3-2.
The Bison stopped the subtle scoring spree as an Adi Reese single into left drove in Reagan Ford to provide a two-run cushion.
Southern Nazarene threatened in the sixth, leaving two on base after two hits, but the acts weren’t enough as Kayleigh Jones struck out three batters over the final two innings to crush SNU’s glimmer of hope.
Jones earned the victory after punching out 11 batters in a complete game of action. The win brings her season record to 14-2.
Ford recorded two hits in three at-bats, while Johnson charted the first home run of her career. Additionally, Clark and Reese had a hit and an RBI apiece.
GAME TWO
Southern Nazarene returned with a vengeance in game two, tallying two hits and a score in the opening frame. OBU attained control in its at-bat, matching SNU’s run total to knot the tally one-all.
That score came via Samantha Campos, whose sacrifice fly out to right field plated Ford.
After a scoreless second inning, the Bison tacked on a couple more in the third on a Ford RBI and score on a wild pitch.
SNU failed to capitalize over the final innings, as three hits the rest of the way produced nothing.
Excellent work in the circle from Aspen Younce and Morgan Max, along with the Bison defense, prevented the Crimson Storm from making good of their opportunities. Younce saw action through 5.2 innings, striking out five of the 25 batters she faced to improve her season mark to 3-1. Max turned in 1.1 innings of relief work without allowing a run or hit.
Offensively, Ford went 2-for-2, scored twice, and brought in a runner. Three others registered a hit, including Campos, who tallied the other RBI.
