OBU is pleased to announce Christy Nockels will be the featured speaker for Women’s Missions and Ministry Day on Wednesday, March 1. Nockels is a songwriter, recording artist, podcast host, author, and familiar female vocalist of the Passion Conference. Women’s Mission and Ministry Day is an annual event promoting the profound impact women make in missions and ministry around the world each day.
Nockels, an OBU alumna, will speak during the 10 a.m. chapel service. Chapel is free and open to the public. The University will host a special Women’s Missions and Ministry Day luncheon with Nockels as the special guest beginning at 11:30 a.m. in Room 219-220 of the Geiger Center on campus. Ticket cost is $30. Luncheon tickets and are required through pre-purchase online.
As a worship leader for over 25 years, Nockels’ heart and passion are to lead people to connect and communicate with the living God.
“I have seen firsthand how music can usher people into the presence of God in a powerful way,” she said.
With a love for music and worship from a very early age, Nockels began leading worship corporately at the age of seventeen. In 1993, she recorded her first independent record with her husband Nathan, and worship leader and friend Charlie Hall, under the name of Sons & Daughters. Their first album titled, Holy Roar, was originally a collection of songs meant for a church plant. The trio had a ground-breaking sound for their time, and each of their hearts were burning to see renewal happen in the Church.
Not long after their album was released, Louie Giglio, founder of the Passion Conference, wrote to the trio saying, “the songs you are singing are the prayers we are praying.” Giglio then invited Sons & Daughters to participate in the first ever Passion Conference in Austin, Texas, that next year.
After moving to Houston, Texas, Nockels and her husband led a weekly gathering of over 3,000 young people. It was during that chapter, that they formed the duo Watermark where Christy’s voice began gaining a national platform. They moved to Franklin, Tennessee, where over the next 10 years they would record five acclaimed albums, including seven number one radio singles.
In 2008, the Nockels family of five moved to Atlanta to become a founding family of the Passion City Church where they served on the worship team. During that season of time, Nockels signed with sixstepsrecords, releasing her acclaimed solo debut album Life Light Up, and later released two more solo albums, Into the Glorious and her live worship album Let it Be Jesus. She traveled worldwide for the next seven years with Passion Conferences.
Nockels is now co-owner of Keeper’s Branch Records along with her husband. They created their own independent record label and released three albums in three years. Afterwards in 2017, she released an album of lullabies meant for all ages, as well as an instrumental version of the lullabies which was nominated for a Dove Award.
Her latest endeavor is the creation of her podcast called, The Glorious in the Mundane. This form of communication has allowed Nockels to use her voice beyond just singing. She is developing a love for writing and speaking and admits she is being stretched beyond her musical borders as she continues to follow her passion of inspiring others in their worship and connection with God.
Nockels currently lives in Franklin, Tennessee, with her family at their homestead, “Keeper’s Branch”.
